There will be night time closures of the A1 (M) from the 21st March 2024, for up to 5 weeks, between Junctions 44 & 45 of the A1(M) . During the closures traffic from the A1(M) will be diverted as follows:
- Northbound diversion – Paradise Way, Thorner Road and West Woods Road
- Southbound diversion – West Woods Road, Thorner Road and Paradise Way

Dear Customer,
A1(M) / Thorner Road (Tenter Hill) Bridge – painting scheme
We’re getting in touch to let you know that we’ll soon be carrying out essential maintenance work on a bridge over the A1(M).
What we are doing and when
We will be cleaning the structure, removing the existing paint layers and applying several coats of new paint to the bridge which carries Thorner Road over the A1(M).
We need to carry out this work to keep the bridge in good condition as the existing paint is over 30 years old. The new paint will protect key elements of the bridge from further deterioration.
We plan to start work on Thursday 21 March 2024 for approximately five weeks working overnight, Monday to Friday and every other weekend, between 8pm and 6am. We will start work on the northbound section of the A1(M) and once completed, we will move to the southbound section of the A1(M).
We will also undertake maintenance works such as refreshing white lining, replacing road studs, drainage works and barrier tensioning whilst the road is closed.
There will be some noise created during the removal of the existing paint layers which will be completed during the early stages of the works.
Closures and diversions
Our team will work overnight under a full road closure on A1(M), Monday to Friday, and every other weekend, from 8pm until 6am. The A1(M) will remain open during the day. No road closures will take place over the Easter Bank Holiday.
A fully signed diversion, agreed with the local council, will be in place between junction 44 and junction 45 of the A1(M). The northbound diversion is Paradise Way, Thorner Road and West Woods Road. The southbound diversion is West Woods Road, Thorner Road and Paradise Way.
We will commence works on the northbound section of the bridge, so traffic will still be able to travel on the southbound section of A1(M). Once this section is complete, we will then move to the southbound section, so traffic will be able to travel on the northbound section of the A1(M).
