The Bramham Parish Centre (formerly the Senior Citizens Centre)is a community asset generously gifted to the Parish under Covenant by the Lane Fox family in 1968 and administered by the Parish Council. There is a date stone reading 1959; the building was opened in 1960 and then subsequently extended in size in the 1980s.
It was a freely available facility at the historic centre of the village but prior to being redeveloped it was underused due to its poor condition and lack of facilities.
In 2005 the Village Plan had identified the shortcomings of the building, then known as the “Old People’s Shelter” and identified “ the Old People’s Shelter, owned by the Parish and administered by the Parish Council, has shortcomings in that there are no toilets and it does not have a water supply or drainage facilities that would enable tea and coffee to be served if required. It is centrally situated and ideally placed as a drop-in centre for retired people were it not for these drawbacks.”
A Structural Engineer’s condition survey commissioned in 2014 confirmed multiple structural issues including a lean of the construction and sloping floor (potentially through poor provision of a concrete ground slab which has moved and settled over time), damp ingress, differential movement, erosion, cracking and deterioration of stonework and pointing. If the existing building is retained it will necessitate significant expenditure in the foreseeable future.
In the Bramham cum Oglethorpe Neighbourhood Development Plan 2018 – 2033, 4.2.2 LR2: Enhancement of the Senior Citizens’ Centre is identified as one of the priorities for the community.
The Centre now provides a safe and accessible environment within the village where the community can enjoy a range of leisure and social activities as well as providing a focal point for developing the cohesion and vitality of the community itself. Rebuilding social interaction and community cohesion is especially important post-Covid and a key aim of the Parish Council.
Rebuilding the Centre has provided a high specification, purpose-built, future-proofed facility, designed specifically with accessibility and sustainability in mind and with reduced energy and maintenance costs.
